VIJAYAWADA, SEPT. 7. The Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, S. Jaipal Reddy, has called upon entrepreneurs and businessmen to to set up FM radio stations.
Laying the foundation stone for the All-India Radio's 10 KW FM transmitter here on Monday, Mr. Reddy said entrepreneurs from Vijayawada should make use of the opportunity to set up FM stations in the private sector. He urged colleges and universities also to consider having a community radio, which would not cost more than Rs 10 lakhs.
Responding to the pleas of businessmen of the city at a meeting, Mr. Reddy asked them to understand the historic background of economic policies. He urged businessmen in Vijayawada to transform themselves into industrialists and said that if anybody wanted to set up a major industry, he would extend help in his capacity as Union Minister and underscored the need for Vijayawada to become a major industrial hub. He wanted the businessmen to have an active stock exchange in the city to encourate active participation from small investors.
Expecting the Government to set up major industries was obsolete, he explained. Introduction of VAT system was only to reduce multiplicity in taxation. Mr. Reddy said he trying to prevail upon the Union Government to expand the busy Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway No.9 into a four-lane road.
